Two Socks Memorial Fund (1987-2022)
Access Equestrian, Inc. (Middle Atlantic)
Our beloved Two Socks, died suddenly on March 18th, at 35 years old. We chose him for this campaign prior to his death because he represents that there are always next chapters for horses. Two Socks was rescued by his owner from a kill-pen at the age of six. He has been a working member of our adaptive therapy program since 2013. Every time we tried to retire him, he would tell us he was not ready and wanted to work! Two Socks is posing with two of our teen United States Pony Club members. He helped them earn their D2 Pony Club ratings this past fall. Two Socks was a barn favorite, and excelled in adaptive riding lessons, Pony Club sessions, loved to be groomed, and was also in charge of keeping our two young weanlings in line during turn-out. He was one the of most intuitive and loving horses we have ever met! We have established a Memorial Fund in his honor.

Pongo and Perdita
Begin Again Horse Rescue Inc (Middle Atlantic)
Photo @Lydia Anne LaDue
Pongo and Perdita, both leopard appaloosas, arrived at Begin Again Horse Rescue when Perdita, who was blind from Glaucoma, needed intense and expensive treatments. When the medical treatments did not relieve her pain, her eyes were surgically removed by our veterinarians. Pongo, who is dedicated to being a seeing-eye for the little mare, accompanied Perdita to the hospital to offer her support and comfort. Perdita is now pain-free and romps about the pasture with her friend, Pongo, like two peas in a pod. Pongo and Perdita are being offered for adoption together to an approved home within a two hour radius of Lima, NY, or they will have a forever home at Begin Again Horse Rescue.

Lazarus
Bergen County Horse Rescue (Middle Atlantic)
We spotted this underweight, discouraged soul on a Facebook horse auction site and we knew he needed to be rescued. On Thanksgiving eve, a Facebook message was shared with friends of our rescue, who showed up early on Thanksgiving morning to clean a field area near a stall and build a temporary turnout in which to quarantine Laz. We rescued Laz from auction and brought him home to our rescue. You'd never recognize this frisky, energetic fellow now as he tears around his turnout, throws his head and shakes his mane with sheer joy!

Rosie
Gleneayre Equestrian Program (Middle Atlantic)
Rosie was adopted by Gleneayre from a local rescue where she had been found tied to a chain-link fence and near starvation. She came at Gleneayre scared and shy but with love to give and that trust and hope are possible even in difficult situations. As an instrumental part of our Working Student Program, the students have had the opportunity to learn firsthand what is involved with rehabilitating a rescue horse and to experience the rewards.

Teddy Bear
National Riding Stables Horse Rescue (Middle Atlantic)
Ted, short for "Teddy Bear", which this sweet big boy thinks he is, was near starvation when we rescued him. With a special diet and loving care, Ted has regained approximately 700 lbs. and is now a healthy, happy love bug! At 18.2 hands, Ted is the biggest boy in our stables but thinks he's still a cuddly little foal. He would sit on your lap if you let him but we don't advise it!

Kidd
Omega Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (Middle Atlantic)
Kidd is a five year old chestnut gelding who came to Omega Horse Rescue as a feral stallion from the kill pen. He learned how to be haltered and led and was eventually gelded. He is now easy to catch, halter and lead. He has been ground driven and worked over simple obstacles from the ground, and he has been ponied off another horse as well. All of these things help him gain trust experience and confidence in anticipation of his Next Chapter.

Twisted Tom
ReRun (Middle Atlantic)
Twisted Tom was a fan favorite on the NY racing circuit winning $940,000. When his breeders became concerned that the popular eight year old gelding was still racing, he was claimed by Rick Schosberg, the President of Take The Lead, the NY horsemen's track retirement program, to retire the horse to Rerun. His retirement is a perfect example of how race tracks, owners, breeders and trainers can work together to ensure the safety and welfare of horses and provide the best possible outcome for horses in need of aftercare options.

Louie
Roanchar Ranch Draft Horse Rescue (Middle Atlantic)
Louie's owners leased him for lessons at the barn where he was boarded to offset expenses. When he contracted EPM, equine protozoal myeloencephalitis that left him unrideable, his owners were forced to find him another home because they could not afford the boarding fees. Louie found his way to Roanchar Ranch Draft Horse Rescue in the Spring of 2020. It didn't take long for his fun-loving personality to show. He loves picking up things with his mouth, like training sticks or coats. He is in the process of learning tricks so that he can show off all his talents. While Louie still exhibits some symptoms of EPM, his current treatment is producing positive results. We hope to be able to reevaluate his riding options in the summer.

Pumpkin
Second Chance Thoroughbreds Inc. (Middle Atlantic)
Regala Di Trieste (Pumpkin) is a 20 year old Thoroughbred and mother of 9 foals who then ended up at a local auction. She is aunt to American Pharoah, having the same dam as Pioneer of the Nile (Star of Goshen). She's made great progress. We plan on taking Pumpkin to some local shows this spring and summer and document her journey from broodmare to show horse. Pumpkin is a perfect example of how trainable retired broodmares are, even after decades of no riding.
